GREAT AUNT HANNAH
and her big blue rocket
It was Great Aunt Hannah who inspired this adventure. She was 75 years old when I was born, but I remember her driving my brothers and me around town in her big blue Oldsmobile Rocket. We figured she dyed her hair to match that car. Aunt Hannah was from that old school of ladies who wore gloves and hats. And she always smelled SO good.
Years later, long after Hannah was gone, I was at a meeting and suddenly smelled an oddly familiar fragrance. Someone was wearing Hannah’s perfume, and the memory immediately transported me back to that big blue car, Hannah at the wheel in her hat and gloves. It felt as if I was there, not dreaming it, not thinking about it, but THERE.
I began to realize how smells have that ability - to transport us, to trigger memories long forgotten. The smell of the ocean on a particular day, the smell of a certain flower in bloom - out of the blue, a long-forgotten sniff can take us back in time. We all have experienced this. Science calls it olfactory memory.
I had long had an interest in altered realities. In the 1970s, we were just learning about the different brain wave states, and how they could be used to help reach goals, improve self-esteem, make life better. It occurred to me that if the smell of Aunt Hannah’s perfume in a meeting could produce such a vivid memory experience, it must be triggering my brain to enter into another brainwave state - without my even trying. This brainwave state is known as alpha - the state of daydreaming. When conditions are right (as during hypnosis or meditation, or when falling asleep) alpha automatically glides into the brainwave state known as theta - a “deeper” subconscious state in which the mind is tremendously open to suggestion.
What if, I reasoned, one could combine fragrance and meditation to create a double whammy of subconscious suggestibility? Could that potentially create an unstoppable motivation to achieve one’s goals? A brand new smell coupled with a motivational meditation would give the mind a brand new path - a trigger accessible anytime, forever, to bring one’s mind back to a place of willpower and self assurance by simply taking a whiff of a brand new smell uniquely associated with that feeling of strength and calm.
This is how I began researching LimbaSlim in 2002. We changed the name from AromaSlim in 2008 because of a branding confusion with a cellulite cream that appeared on the internet. We love the new name LimbaSlim - a reference to the Limbic System.
In August 2009 we introduced LimbaQuit, LimbaFit and LimbaSleep.
LimbaTidy joined the lineup in 2010.
I can also make custom recordings for your own personal challenges.
